Water is the lifeline of new sod — and getting it right in the first few weeks can make or break your lawn’s success. At New Jersey Sod Co., we make sure every customer has a clear understanding of how to water properly so your grass thrives from day one.
Here’s a general week-by-week watering schedule to follow after your sod installation:
Week 1: Water 2–4 times a day for 10–15 minutes each session. The goal is to keep the sod constantly moist without causing puddles. Avoid letting it dry out at any point.
Week 2: Cut back to 1–2 times a day. By now, roots are beginning to take hold, and your goal is to encourage deeper root growth by spacing out watering a bit.
Week 3: Water once daily or every other day, depending on weather and rain. Begin watching for signs of sod rooting — it should be more difficult to lift from the soil.
Week 4+: Transition to a maintenance schedule. Water 2–3 times a week with deeper soaks (25–30 minutes), preferably in the early morning.
New sod is vulnerable in its first month. Walk on it sparingly, avoid mowing too early, and monitor it closely for dry spots. We’ll provide every client with a complimentary aftercare sheet and offer phone support in case anything appears to be incorrect.
